On Saturday 21st September, we (Saxon Packaging), and several members of Lowestoft Community Church, joined over 8,000 other Smurfit Kappa employees in taking part in this year’s World Cleanup Day.
World Cleanup Day is one of the largest one-day peacetime civic action against waste, aiming to raise awareness of the global mismanaged waste crisis and its impact on the environment. These events create change in society by promoting change in individual behaviour, creating awareness of litter & waste and help to divert civil & government attention to the crisis.
Close to 30 volunteers turned up to participate at the meeting point outside Red Oak Primary School, Lowestoft. After a swift coffee and a short safety briefing, we made our way up to Kirkley Ham; an area often used by local residents and dog walkers that has been overcome with litter over the years.
Some of the most interesting finds of the day included a slipper, bike tire and a tent!
By the end of our clean-up event, we had managed to fill 7 bags of recyclable litter and 8 bags of non-recyclable litter and left Kirkley Ham, Lowestoft looking noticeably cleaner, creating a much nicer environment for the community who frequent it.
Thank you and well done to our employees, families & friends and the members of Lowestoft Community Church, who took part in this very special event. We would also like to thank Waveney Norse, who kindly provided us with litter-picking equipment for all to use on the day.
“I really appreciate the input and commitment from all who took part in this fantastic World Cleanup Day event, a great demonstration of our desire to making a difference and working within our community.” Andy Smith – General Manager
